Minoxidil (Rogaine 5%)Minoxidil was the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss. Originally developed as a drug to treat high blood pressure, it was discovered that the topical application of the drug on balding areas could result in new growth. Minoxidil has been shown to be particularly effective in the crown of the scalp, slowing hair loss and stimulating new hair growth.
Minoxidil works by increasing the flow of blood to the targeted area. It is applied directly to the scalp. It can be used by both men and women.
Propecia (Finasteride 1mg)Finasteride was originally developed as a treatment for enlarged prostate glands. As a side effect, hair growth was observed. Today, Finasteride is the first FDA approved drug to effectively treat male pattern baldness in the majority of men who use it. Finasteride works by inhibiting the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for targeting hair follicles, eventually leading to baldness. Unlike Minoxidil, Finasteride is taken in pill form and recommended for male consumption only.
